For sixteen years, I thought my job was to create beautiful family photographs.

So I'd straighten shirts.
Ask everyone to squeeze in and then command smiles.

Take the photograph everyone showed up for.
I loved many of those images.

But the ones I remembered most were never planned.
A teenager laughing at something only their brother understood, while their mom watched them instead of the camera.
A son reaching for his dad's hand.

That's when I realized…

I'd been asking families to pay attention to the wrong thing.

I won’t ask you to perform.
You don’t have to look at me.

Pay attention to each other. I’ll do the same.
